A Sympathetic Boss Helps A Worker Address His Abusive Drinking After A Destroyed Relationship
Barry got suspended from high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local office supply manufacturer. For the past five years he has gained a reputation as a reliable and hard-working employee who hardly ever takes off from work because of illness.
About nine months ago he started going out with a lady named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and looked like they had a lot of fun together.
When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This totally changed when they began seeing each other on a fairly regular basis. As a matter of fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol unexpectedly called Barry one night roughly 2 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's condo and found out almost immediately that she had already moved out. Barry received this news very hard. In fact, he was bewildered because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's leaving? Rather than working through his grief and anguish, he began getting inebriated almost every night. It didn't take long for his buddies at work and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times every week and that he frequently called off sick. Furthermore, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and mentioned that Barry continually came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Wednesday afternoon he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed a distinct change in his attendance, sick time, behavior, and in his work performance.
"Barry, I'm not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not especially all that conversant with alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen several of my friends and relatives go through some really bad problems because of their heavy and abusive drinking. My suggestion is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse can do to an individual."
"Why is this relevant? When individuals involve themselves in heavy and abusive drinking, their drinking problems not only adversely affect the drinker, but they also adversely affect her or his friends, co-workers, family, relatives, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your irresponsible and hazardous drinking from our fine employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his supervisor very much and as a result followed through with his recommendation the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare professional in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any less depressed or feel better about the loss of Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his supervisor and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some emotional relief for the first time in quite a few weeks and he frankly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
The Tremendous Impact Of Heavy And Irresponsible Drinking And Drinking Problems On Meaningful Relationships One of the alcohol abuse facts about problem drinking that somehow escapes the awareness of many individuals is that irresponsible drinking frequently hurts important relationships.
